Community pharmacies could play a major role in expanding access to HIV prevention medicine called PrEP, but in most U.S. states pharmacists are limited by law in what they can prescribe. Currently, only 17 states allow pharmacists to provide PrEP directly. This review looked at research on how pharmacists in more restrictive states are still finding ways to offer PrEP services. We found 10 studies that described different approaches, such as partnering with doctors through special agreements. However, none of the studies used the strongest type of research design, which means more evidence is needed. Future research should test new ways for community pharmacies to safely and effectively expand PrEP access.
